Becoming an Instructor

This is one really useful way of making a worthwhile contribution to the club. The more instructors the club has, the more the work involved in training can be spread, and the more training we can offer. The first step is to attend a BSAC Instructor Foundation Course.

All Instructor courses and exams are "at cost". BSAC instructor trainers do not get paid for running the events, so costs are kept as low as possible. You will be informed before the event as to exact fees, which will depend on logistics such as where the course takes place.

An instructor at work

At present all instructor courses and exams run in the club will require the involvement of instructors from outside Kuwait. Courses and exams are offered quite regularly in other Gulf countries where they have a number of National Instructors qualified to run the events. Depending on the circumstances and the demand we can either organise an event in Kuwait using visiting instructors or individuals can attend events in other countries. Sometimes the club will subsidise the cost.

Instructor Foundation Course

Minimum entry level: BSAC Sports Diver

Qualification gained: Assistant Diving Instructor

This is a two day course with no assessment, which teaches you the essential elements of instruction. Successful completion of this course will allow you to teach classroom and sheltered-water lessons under on-site supervision and open-water lessons under the direct supervision of an instructor who holds the minimum qualification of BSAC Open Water Instructor.

We hope to be able to organise this course using visiting instructors whenever we have sufficient divers interested to make it viable.

Open Water Instructor Course

Minimum entry level: BSAC Dive Leader & Assistant Diving Instuctor

(Note that qualification as a Theory Instructor is NOT required)

Qualification gained: Assistant Open Water Instructor

Two day course (no assessment) which will allow you to teach classroom, sheltered-water, and open-water lessons under on-site supervision of an instructor who holds the minimum qualification of BSAC Open Water Instructor.

Theory Instructor Exam

Minimum entry level: BSAC Dive Leader & Assistant Diving Instructor

(Note that qualification as an Assistant Open Water Instructor is NOT required)

Qualification gained: Theory Instructor

A one day assessment which will allow you to teach classroom lessons unsupervised.

Practical Instructor Exam

Minimum entry level: Assistant Open Water Instructor

Qualification gained: Practical Instructor

A one day assessment which will allow you to teach sheltered-water and open-water lessons unsupervised.

Open Water Instructor

If you have gained both Theory Instructor and Practical Instructor qualifications then BSAC will issue you with an Open Water Instructor qualification. You are now considered to be a Nationally Qualified Instructor (NQI) and can teach all elements of the Ocean Diver, Sports Diver, and Diver Leader courses unsupervised.

Moreover, if you are also an Advanced Diver, you may teach parts of the Advanced Diver course.

Advanced Instructor Course

Minimum entry level: BSAC Advanced Diver & Open Water Instructor

Qualification gained: Assistant Advanced Instructor

Two day course (no assessment, although detailed feedback is given). This is an essential step towards becoming an Advanced Instructor and a good way of starting to prepare for the First Class Diver award.

Advanced Instructor Exam

Minimum entry level: BSAC Advanced DiverĀ & Assistant Advanced Instructor

Qualification gained: Advanced Instructor

A two-day practical assessment and theory examination. Successful completion of this instructor grade will allow you to teach all elements of the Advanced Diver course unsupervised.

After this it is possible to progress to becoming an Instructor Trainer, or even a BSAC National Instructor - for which latter you also need to be a First Class Diver.

Qualified Instructor with Another Agency?

The BSAC recognizes instructors qualified with most agencies (e.g. PADI, NAUI). On successful completion of an Instructor Foundation Course, application to BSAC headquarters with payment for the induction pack and Open Water Instructor card, and Open Water Instructor is awarded.
